The current versions of Ken Vandermark's project Powerhouse Sound is an all-Chicago configuration consisting of Vandermark on saxophones, Jeff Parker on guitar, Nate McBride on bass and electronics, and John Herndon on drums. On this vinyl double-LP, the quartet rework much of the material from the excellent first album Oslo/Chicago: Breaks from 2007, with the same bass-heavy sound (this is Vandermark's dub reggae project) and driving funk characteristic of much of Vandermark's work, but perhaps a little more under control than on Breaks. Very strong - a band that truly lives up to its name. --Mike Chamberlain
The second album by
Powerhouse sound brings several tracks of the first album : "New Dirt", "Coxsonne", "Acid Scratch", "2-1-75", "Shocklee", "Exit Salida". Actually, only "Broken Numbers" is a new track, penned for the band in 2007, properly rehearsed, and with two versions on this album. This repetition with their debut album more than explains the album's title.
